Whale Rescue in Key Stage 1

We had been reading “The Whale and the Snail” by Julia Donaldson.
In the story, the whale gets stranded on the beach and can’t get back out to see. We were keen to see how you could possibly do that with such a big creature.

We couldn’t believe our eyes when we arrived at the hall last week! In the middle of the floor was a full sized sperm whale!! Richard Ilderton and Sarah Rose from the British Marine Life Rescue were on hand to show us how to rescue the beached whale. Whale’s lose their way when their sonar is confused by sounds like boat engines and oil drilling.

They end up swimming too near the shore and getting stuck. It takes a lot of people and teamwork to help get the mammals back out to sea.

We worked together to form a human chain to get buckets of water from the sea to the whale, then used inflatable tubes and matting to move the whale back out to the ocean.

It was fun and we learned loads.
